Paramedic Program-Selection Process
Minimum
Admission Requirements
Applicants
meeting the following minimum requirements may proceed to the competitive
entrance testing process
- 18 years old
or older
- High school
diploma or GED certificate
- Possess a
current EMT-Basic certificate issued by the Nevada State EMS Division
- Possess a
current AHA or ARC Healthcare provider CPR certification
- Proof of
current immunizations:
- Negative TB test within past 6 months
- At least the first of the Hepatitis B vaccine series within the
past 30 days
- MMR
- Proof of
Health Insurance (must maintain throughout program)
- Submit
completed application and required testing fee.
- Submit
Personal Statement with application.
- Meet
requirements of the Functional Job Summary and Qualifications of the
Paramedic.
- While
previous Emergency Services experience is not required, it is highly
recommended that the applicant has a minimum of 6 months of experience in
EMS or related field that requires decision-making under stressful
conditions.
Mandatory Orientation and Testing Session
The applicant is required to
attend an orientation session that provides information on the program, the
selection process, and testimonials from previous students. After the one
hour orientation session the applicants will be eligible for the testing
process. Acceptance into the REMSA Paramedic Program is a competitive
process. The applicant must
successfully pass the
Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET)
and EMT-Basic test. A study guide for the HOBET is
available from Educational Resources, Inc., 1-800-292-2273.
The entire orientation and testing should take up to four hours.
Oral Interview Process
Applicants
successfully completing those tests will then be scheuled for the Oral
Interview process.
Applicants will
respond to standardized questions from the oral interview committee. The
applicant’s responses will be evaluated based on verbal communication
skills, life experience, emergency service experience, and maturity. The
applicant’s Personal Statement will be reviewed by the committee for content
and written communications ability, and will be considered when scoring the
applicant’s Oral Interview.
The results of
the written examination, oral interview, and Emergency Services experience
will be weighted and scored as follows:
- Written Exam results weighs as 33.33% of the
total score

Oral Interview results weighs as 33.33% of the
total score

Relative Emergency Services Experience weighs as
33.33% of total score.
Applicants will
then be ranked based on their weighted scores, with the oral interview
committee deciding how many total students will be offered acceptance into
the program.
